Hi, I’m Sahil Bora… and I used to think that I was just unable to learn C++ & it wasn’t meant to be

Writing it now makes me laugh but I was really considering that my brain is just not good enough for C++.

It’s 2009. I was 15 and decided to learn to program.

I didn’t have a mentor or someone to tell me what exactly to do. Actually, at the time no one knew. Everyone had their anecdotal experience, so there I was testing everything I can get my hands to.

Every strategy, from every forum, post, or video I was there trying to apply it and learn C++.

I did learn it!

It only took me years out of my life. Skipping high-school and college parties. Pulling all-nighters writing code while chugging another Monster.

I accepted that to learn this I need to become an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby.

On top of that, my health was suffering. It’s crazy. I wasn’t even 17 and I was feeling extremely stressed and frustrated on a daily basis.

Fast forward a few years it was 2014 and I was in college.

We had a C++ class. It was a core subject with a tutor that can easily torture people with boredom. You were able to see people falling asleep almost every single time.

My friend amazed the professor but even more, he amazed himself that C++ is not only straightforward to understand but also extremely interesting to learn.

All you need is someone that can actually explain it better.

The mid-semester exam? Of course, he passed it with flying colors!

Ever since then my time was devoted to helping people change their career paths, learning programming for projects, or engineering students who wanted to confidently pass their exams.

My C++ process was refined over and over again. Many things were removed, while others were created while working with my students. Every time making my program getting better and better.

Until I finally revealed the exact step-by-step formula that can be taught to anybody to get instant results in the shortest period of time possible.

You see, there’s a tremendous and overwhelming amount of confusing information out there on C++.

And everything seems to be taught by people who don’t care very much about simplifying and explaining things. Explaining in a way that could easily be understood by the ordinary less-nerdy person.

This took a toll on my social life.

Damn it… I mean I was a 16-year-old teenager. I wasn’t supposed to spend all my time looking and thinking about lines of code.

Because later in my life this brought me to the point of major social troubles. You see, I’ve never kissed a girl. I’ve never even got rejected by a girl… because I had never asked one out at the time. My brain wasn’t even thinking about friends or social activities. It was occupied by syntaxis, errors, and terminology.

This meant that later in life I had to spend thousands of dollars to proactively work on my social skills. Learning how to make small talk without mentioning anything about software development.

But now let’s go back to 2014. I was at college studying electrical engineering.

My friend, who didn’t pass the mid-semester mandatory C++ class, said to me:

‘Studying feels like drudgery to me… It seems like I’m set-up for failure from the get-go’

‘Sahil, what can I do to be like you?’ he went on.

‘You know, I really wanna be that guy who the rest of the class look up to for help concerning C++.’

Needless to say, I was touched by his words.

At that very moment, I decided to help my friend.

We had 2 weeks before the next practical programming assessment.

But I knew I had to break things down to a level that will not only be extremely easy for him to understand but will also be fun and exciting.

He wasn’t a C++ obsessed nerd who was studying as his life depends on it.

And he most certainly wasn’t a 15-year-old with all the time in the world for the next 5 years.

Actually, we had not more than 2-3 hours a day because he was having a job.

That meant that I had to compress 5 years of 1365-page book and countless tutorials into 14 hours of practical programming.

By outlining the most important fundamental parts that construct the code.

Explained in simple English that even an 8th grader can understand.

Cutting out all the unnecessary stuff that all those textbooks & tutorials have. Instead, focusing on the 20% of the information that constructs 80% of the programs.
